Shane, 2011 -
Pigment Inkjet on cotton rag, 92cm x 65cm Edition 1/9 (3AP) Selected finalist in the Josephine Ulrick & Win Schubert Photography Award, 2012 This ambiguous portrait captures Shane Jenek preparing for his transformation into his glamorous identity, the renowned performer Courtney Act. In my photography, I often explore issues of sexuality and gender identification, and to question the codes of what is considered to be ‘normal’ behavior. This image is an-other example of pushing the boundaries, blurring the borderlines of accepted notions of gender. Shane is pictured in an unguarded moment, with his hair a mess and wearing a prosthetic bosom. Unlike in most classic portraiture you don’t see the subject’s eyes or his facial expression. Instead Shane is placed in front of an equally curious painting by Mertim Gokalp, the Turkish-born, Sydney-based artist whose work also tackles aspects of the beauty myth, on the edge of insanity. I find the two images play off each other inadvertently, helping to create additional, dramatic tension. As always, in photography I am fascinated by this dialogue between what is hidden and what is revealed.
